Often times we write off what someone tells us as useless information because we think they are just trying to put their nose where it doesn’t belong. But sometimes people are offering what I call “free advice” — their genuine perspective on the topic at-hand. One of the key indicators of this can be whether or not they have a stake in the topic. If they have nothing to gain or lose, there is a good chance they are simply telling you what they would do based on their past experiences. It can still be a difficult thing to discern, but do not ignore “free advice” when it’s given and intended to be nothing more. One day you might look back and think, “If only I had listened…”
